Travel Insurance Explained

A Simple Guide to Travel Insurance with Journy

What Is Travel Insurance?
Travel insurance is there to help protect you before and during your holiday. Many people think it only matters once you’re away, but it can actually help if something goes wrong before you even set off.

Let’s say you’ve booked a holiday and then something unexpected happens—like getting sick or having an accident—and you can’t go. Travel insurance might help you get your money back.

That’s why it’s a good idea to get travel insurance as soon as you book your trip, not just right before you go.

Why Do People Need It?
The biggest reason people get travel insurance is to help cover the cost of medical treatment if they get ill or injured while abroad. Medical bills can be really expensive in other countries—sometimes thousands, even hundreds of thousands of pounds!

But travel insurance can also help with other things, like:

  • If you need to cancel or cut your trip short
  • If your bags or personal items go missing or get stolen
  • If you accidentally damage someone else’s stuff or hurt someone

These are called benefits or cover in your policy. Each benefit will have two important things to look out for:

  • Limit – the most money the policy will pay out
  • Excess – the amount you have to pay yourself before the insurance pays the rest

Here are some examples to explain:

🧳 You have baggage cover of £1000 with an excess of £100:

  • You lose items worth £500 → You pay £100, insurance pays £400
  • You lose items worth £1100 → You pay £100, insurance pays £1000
  • You lose items worth £1500 → You pay £100, insurance still pays £1000 (the maximum), so you’re £400 out of pocket

So, it’s important to choose the right amount of cover so you’re not left short if something happens.

Journy offers three levels of cover: Silver, Gold, and Platinum – you can pick the one that fits your needs and budget best.

What Type of Policy Do I Need?
First, decide whether you want:

✅ Annual Travel Insurance

  • Covers you for a whole year
  • No limit on how many trips you take
  • Same cover as a single trip policy
  • Great value if you go away more than twice a year

🧳 Single Trip Insurance

  • Covers just one holiday
  • Good for people who are only going away once or twice

Where Are You Going?
If you’re buying a single trip policy, just tell us the country or countries you’re visiting – we’ll list them on your insurance paperwork.

If you’re getting an annual policy, you’ll choose a region. Here’s how we group the world:

  1. Europe
  2. Worldwide (excluding USA, Canada, Mexico, Caribbean)
  3. Worldwide (including USA, Canada, Mexico, Caribbean)

Each region includes all the countries in the one(s) above it. So, if you choose Worldwide (excluding USA etc), it also includes Europe.

If you’re going to more than one place (like on a cruise or a road trip), make sure your policy includes every country you’ll visit. You can check the full list of countries in each region on our website.

Extra Cover (Options)
To keep our prices low, we only include the cover most people need. But you can add extras for things like:

  • ⛷ Winter Sports – for skiing or snowboarding
  • 🚢 Cruise Cover
  • 📱 Gadget Cover – for phones, tablets, laptops, etc.

These cost a bit more but give you extra protection for specific types of trips.

What Does Your Policy Include?
Your Journy Travel Insurance policy is made up of lots of different benefits (cover levels), which help in different travel situations. For a full list of everything that’s included, check out our Benefits Guide.
